A Day at Shelsley Walsh: Celebrating British Motoring Heritage with Lucas Classic

There’s something undeniably special about the sound of a classic engine echoing through the Worcestershire countryside—and on Saturday 21st June, that magic was alive and roaring.

We spent an unforgettable day celebrating over a century of British motoring excellence, both on and off the historic Hillclimb course. Hosted at Shelsley Walsh—the world’s oldest motorsport venue still in operation—the Lucas Classic brought together a stunning lineup of iconic British cars, motorcycles, and 4x4s, all connected by the legendary Lucas and Girling brands.

A Journey Through Time

From elegant Jaguars to rugged Land Rovers, spirited Triumphs, Minis with personality, and sleek Aston Martins, the event was a rolling showcase of engineering heritage. Many of the vehicles on display and taking part in the Hillclimb runs were fitted with original Lucas and Girling components—a true nod to the brand's legacy in powering Britain’s best for over 100 years.

Walking through the paddocks felt like stepping back in time. Each car had a story, and their proud owners were more than happy to share it. The Lucas Classic heritage display offered a deep dive into the company’s contribution to automotive history, with vintage parts, original marketing materials, and beautifully restored examples of their work.

The Thrill of the Hill

Watching these classic machines take on the Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb was nothing short of thrilling. The narrow, twisting course demands respect even from the most seasoned drivers, and seeing these vintage vehicles tackling it with style and spirit was a real treat. Whether you were perched on the grass bank or down at the paddock, the views and atmosphere were electric.

More Than Just Motors

Beyond the cars, there was plenty to keep the whole family entertained. Traditional games brought a sense of village fête charm to the day, and live music added to the festive vibe. The food and drink offerings were fantastic, with everything from hearty classics to sweet treats—perfect fuel for a day spent exploring.

One of the highlights was a live Q&A session with Fuzz Townshend, the beloved TV personality and classic car aficionado. His insights into restoration, stories from the road, and enthusiasm for preserving British motoring heritage made for an engaging and inspiring talk.

A Celebration of Legacy

The Lucas Classic at Shelsley Walsh wasn’t just a car show—it was a celebration of craftsmanship, community, and culture. Whether you came for the cars, the history, or just a day out in the sunshine with the family, there was something here for everyone.

As the engines quieted and the sun dipped behind the hills, we left with full hearts and a renewed appreciation for the people, passion, and legacy that keep British motoring alive. Until next year, Lucas!
