Better Rearward Visibility Without Drilling Your Austin Healey

Austin Healey Sprite MK1 fitted with rear view mirrors

See More Behind You, Without Drilling New Holes

Better rearward visibility is useful. Drilling fresh mirror holes into an Austin Healey you have spent years restoring is rather less appealing.

An exterior mirror can make it easier to keep track of traffic behind you, judge what is around the car and manoeuvre into tighter spaces. The difficulty comes when fitting one appears to mean reaching for a drill and making a permanent change to the windscreen pillar, quarter light or carefully finished bodywork.

Depending on the model, it does not have to. Pillar-mounted and quarter-light mirror options use existing fixing positions, dedicated mounting arrangements or clamping mounts, allowing an exterior rearward view to be added without drilling new mirror holes.

Austin Healey Rear View Mirrors at a Glance

Why choose a no-drill exterior mirror?
It provides an additional rearward view without requiring new mirror mounting holes to be drilled into the car.
Which applications are featured here?
MRS120 fits 100 BN1-BN2, MRS121 fits 100/6 BN4-BN6 and 3000 BN7-BT7, MRS112 and MRS113 fit 3000 BJ7-BJ8, and XMRS125 fits Austin Healey Sprite MK1-MK2 / MG Midget MK1.
How are the exterior mirrors mounted?
MRS120 secures at the windscreen pillar with a knurled knob. MRS121 and XMRS125 use the existing pillar-to-body screw position, while MRS112 and MRS113 clamp to the quarter light.
What if my Healey already has mirror holes?
That is not unusual. Many cars have had mirrors fitted, removed or changed during their lives. Check the existing arrangement before ordering. The advantage of these mirrors is that they do not require you to create new mirror mounting holes.
What if the interior rearward view is the problem?
MRS119 is a height-adjustable interior mirror for Big Healey BN1-BJ8 models, providing greater flexibility when positioning the rearward view.

A Mirror Is Useful. An Unnecessary Hole Is Permanent.

There is a good reason owners hesitate before drilling into a restored Healey. Once a hole has been made, it becomes part of the car whether the eventual mirror position proves useful or not.

That decision becomes more significant where paint, trim or bodywork has already been restored. Moving the mirror later may leave another problem behind, quite literally.

The sensible approach is therefore to use an existing mounting position or a clamping arrangement where the model allows it.

A poorly chosen mirror can be changed. An extra hole requires rather more enthusiasm to reverse.

Already Have Mirror Holes? That's a Different Question

And yes, plenty of Austin Healeys already have holes where exterior mirrors have been fitted at some point. After several decades on the road, that should hardly come as a shock.

If your car already has a suitable mounting position from an existing or previous mirror installation, check what is there before choosing a replacement. There is little sense in pretending an existing hole does not exist.

The distinction is that the mirrors featured here do not require you to drill fresh mirror mounting holes simply to fit them.

For an owner with restored or undrilled bodywork, that can make the choice considerably easier. For a car that already has mirror holes, it means you can judge the existing arrangement on its own merits rather than creating yet another one.

How the No-Drill Mirror Options Work

The mounting method changes with the model, but the principle is the same: make use of the car's existing arrangement or clamp to an appropriate part of the car rather than drilling new mirror holes.

Pillar-Mounted Mirrors

  • MRS120: secures at the BN1-BN2 windscreen pillar with a knurled knob.
  • MRS121: uses the existing pillar-to-body screw position on BN4-BT7 models.
  • XMRS125: replaces the existing pillar-to-body screw on Sprite MK1-MK2 / Midget MK1.
  • No new mirror mounting holes are required.

Quarter-Light Mirrors

  • MRS112: rectangular mirror head for BJ7-BJ8.
  • MRS113: round convex mirror for BJ7-BJ8.
  • Both clamp to the quarter-light frame.
  • No drilling is required.
  • The convex MRS113 provides a broader field of view than a flat mirror.

BJ7-BJ8: Clamp the Mirror to the Quarter Light

For Austin Healey 3000 BJ7 and BJ8 models, the quarter light provides an alternative to drilling a mirror mounting point into the car.

MRS112 offers a rectangular mirror head, while MRS113 uses a round convex surface. Both clamp to the quarter-light frame and can provide an additional exterior view when manoeuvring.

The convex MRS113 gives a broader field of view, while MRS112 provides the alternative rectangular design.

When the Interior Mirror Is the Limitation

Not every rearward-visibility problem is solved by adding another exterior mirror.

If the interior mirror sits at an inconvenient height, part of the useful view behind the car may be obscured. That can mean moving your head further to find a clearer sightline when parking, manoeuvring or checking vehicles behind you.

MRS119 solves a different problem. Its adjustable height gives Big Healey owners from BN1-BJ8 more flexibility when positioning the interior rear-view mirror.

Setting the mirror at a more useful height can help provide a less obscured view behind the car, making it easier to judge what is behind you while manoeuvring and to keep track of following traffic on the road.

Better Visibility Without Reaching for the Drill

Adding a useful exterior rearward view does not automatically require another pair of holes in your Austin Healey.

MRS120 uses its windscreen-pillar mounting arrangement, MRS121 and XMRS125 make use of existing pillar-to-body screw positions, while MRS112 and MRS113 clamp to the BJ7-BJ8 quarter light. Different cars, different solutions, but no need to drill fresh mirror mounting holes.

MRS119 deals with the other side of the visibility problem by allowing the interior mirror height to be adjusted for a clearer sightline behind the car.

Before ordering, check the model and the mounting arrangement already present on your Healey. Then choose the mirror that solves the visibility problem without creating another one.
