Get the Fit Right, and the Rest Follows

Every Sprite or Midget owner knows: you can’t fake a good fit. Doors line up, latches click home, and sidescreens slot in like they were always meant to be there. It’s the sort of detail that turns a car from “nearly sorted” to properly satisfying — and it’s why we’ve refined our Sprite & Midget MK1 sidescreens to include perfectly matched mounting brackets.

The Workshop Perspective

You can spot a poorly fitted sidescreen a mile off—bowed frame, gaps big enough to post a letter through, or a latch that only closes if you say something impolite to it.

That’s exactly why we revisited the original design, double-checking door aperture tolerances and hinge alignment against original factory drawings.

Each frame is manufactured to match the correct curve and hinge geometry, which means:

  • The seal sits evenly along the door top.
  • The latch mechanism engages cleanly.
  • The panes stay where they should—even at motorway speeds (yes, we tried it).

It’s the sort of detail that saves hours in the garage and keeps the rain on the right side of the glass.

Fitting Accuracy & Continuous Improvement

Older reproductions often came without brackets, leaving owners to re-use worn originals or fabricate their own. The result? Crooked frames, poor sealing, and a weekend of creative language.

By including purpose-made brackets, we’ve removed that guesswork. Each bracket is zinc-plated for corrosion resistance and drilled precisely to match the mounting holes in your Sprite or Midget door tops.

And because we care about the little details, the aluminium frames carry the original Weathershields Reg’d Design engraving — a subtle nod to the firm that supplied sidescreens for Sprites and Midgets when they were new. It’s not a gimmick, just an honest touch that completes the look and proves we’ve done our homework.

These aren’t just improved sidescreens — they’re an industry first. A H Spares is the only company to have ever produced Sprite & Midget MK1 sidescreens with the correct Weathershields Reg’d Design markings, and this is the first time they’ve ever been supplied as a complete package with correctly engineered brackets. No improvising, no salvaged hardware, no guesswork. Just a set that fits the car as it always should have.

This small improvement speaks volumes about our philosophy: we never stop refining even the simplest parts, because they make all the difference between a car that’s just “together” and one that feels sorted.

Why Owners Will Appreciate the Update

We’ve built these sidescreens with one clear goal — to make fitting them as straightforward and satisfying as it should have been in the first place. The frames line up cleanly, the brackets sit square, and the latch engages without persuasion.

It’s the sort of improvement you’ll notice straight away: fewer adjustments, less frustration, and that quiet satisfaction when everything just fits. That’s the payoff of proper design work and a workshop team who’ve spent enough weekends fettling Healeys to know what a “quick fit” really means.

Don’t Forget the Stowage Bag (XSID118)

When you’re not using your sidescreens, don’t let them clatter about in the boot. Our sidescreen stowage bag keeps the pair protected from scratches and dust. It’s made from durable, lined material with a zip closure — tidy, practical, and period-appropriate.

Technical Insight: A Bit of Sprite History

The Sprite’s removable sidescreens were a clever bit of weight saving—simple Perspex panels instead of winding windows. Brilliant in 1958, but less so when the rubbers harden and the rain sneaks in.

The Mk 1 and Mk 2 designs share the same door frame profile, which means these A H Spares replacements fit both models perfectly, along with the early Midget Mk 1.

Later cars (with wind-up glass) used entirely different doors, so these sidescreens suit early owners who enjoy the straightforward, no-nonsense character of the first cars.

Care & Maintenance Tips

A few workshop pointers for keeping them looking their best:

  • Use a mild plastic polish to remove fine scratches.
  • Apply a touch of silicone spray to the sliding channels to keep the Perspex moving smoothly.
  • Store them flat in the stowage bag when not in use
  • Avoid petroleum-based cleaners — they’ll haze the Perspex faster than you can say “Lucas.”

Do that, and your sidescreens will slide easily, stay clear, and look sharp for years.

Fit It Once, Fit It Right

Don’t wrestle with ill-fitting sidescreens or hunt down odd brackets online. Get a pair that fits properly and look the part.

FAQs

Do these sidescreens fit later Midgets with wind-up windows? No — they’re for early cars only: **Sprite Mk 1/Mk 2** and **Midget Mk 1** with removable sidescreens. Later doors are completely different.
Are the brackets pre-drilled? Yes, each bracket is accurately drilled to match the correct factory positions—no measuring or re-drilling needed.
Do I need to paint or treat the brackets? No, they’re zinc-plated for long-term corrosion protection. A dab of grease on the threads is enough.
Can I use my original stowage bag? You can, but we recommend the new **XSID103** bag—it’s made to modern material standards and protects the Perspex from scratches.
Do they come as a pair? They’re sold **individually**—right and left sides—so you can replace one or both as needed.
